Off-duty Winnipeg cop prevents woman from stealing big-screen TV from Walmart

The woman allegedly threatened an employee with a large knife.

Winnipeg Police are looking for a woman after an off-duty officer prevented her from stealing a big-screen TV from Walmart on Sunday.

The woman, who police describe as being in her mid-20s with mid-length black hair, reportedly grabbed the TV from the Walmart on Empress Street and left without paying for it.

An employee followed her into the parking lot, where she allegedly threatened him with a “large knife.”

An off-duty police officer saw the woman and intervened by using his shopping cart to “create a safe barrier” between the knife-wielding woman and the Walmart employee.

Police say the woman fell to the ground and dropped the TV. She stood up and tried to get it back, but eventually fled empty-handed.

No injuries were reported after the incident.

Police say the woman was wearing a white jacket and black tights at the time of the attempted robbery.

They ask anyone with information to contact their Major Crimes Unit at 204-986-6219 or anonymously at Crime Stoppers 204-786-TIPS or winnipegcrimestoppers.org.
