Man arrested after hijacking Hamilton city bus full of passengers: police

Police say he took the bus for a "joy ride."

A man is facing charges after allegedly hijacking a city bus full of passengers and driving it up Hamilton Mountain.

The 36-year-old man, whom police did not name, reportedly boarded a Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) bus around 9 PM Tuesday while its driver was using the bathroom at a bus terminal and drove off with passengers still on board.

The man reportedly drove the bus up Hamilton Mountain, making several stops along the way and allowing passengers to board and exit freely.

Police say he even denied someone a ride who tried to board with an expired pass.

The man was finally arrested after police stopped the bus near West 5th Street.

He is charged with:

  • Theft Over $5,000

  • Possession Over $5,000

  • Obstruct Police

  • Drive While Prohibited

The man of no fixed address is scheduled to appear in court to answer to the charges.

Nobody was injured during the stunt.
