Former Niagara cop assaults cannabis-store clerk, commits indecent act at liquor store: police

He also allegedly threw a waterbottle at a farm employee.

A former Niagara Police officer was arrested Sunday after allegedly assaulting a female clerk at a cannabis store in St. Catharines.

58-year-old Kenneth Bettes from Niagara-on-the-Lake also allegedly approached several women at a liquor store in Grimsby and made “sexual gestures and comments,” according to police.

In an unrelated incident, Bettes also allegedly “threw a bottle of water at a male employee at a farm in Niagara-on-the-Lake.”

10 years ago, Bettes was listed on the Ontario Sunshine List of government employees earning $100,000/year or more when he was listed as a Niagara Police constable.

Bettes was arrested on Nov. 10 and charged with:

  • 3 counts of Criminal Harassment

  • Assault

  • Indecent Act

  • Assault with a Weapon

Police held Bettes in custody until his bail hearing on Nov. 11. They say they have “reason to believe” there may be other victims and are asking anyone with information to come forward.

They did not release Bettes’ photo, but described him as:

  • Male

  • White

  • 6 ft tall

  • 240lb

  • Shaved head

  • Grey facial hair

Niagara Police told the CBC that Bettes no longer works on the force, but can't release any more information due to privacy legislation.
