Winnipeg man arrested after girlfriend shot during altercation

The woman remains in hospital with life-altering injuries.

A Winnipeg man has been charged with aggravated assault involving a firearm after an altercation with his girlfriend Sunday that ended with her being shot and critically injured.

Machuor Machar Akau, 28, allegedly pulled out a handgun during a 2 AM fight with his 25-year-old girlfriend on Nov. 2, which “discharged and struck her at close range,” according to police.

“Seriously injured, she escaped the building and waved down members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service in the area, who provided her with emergency medical care,” police wrote in a report.

Paramedics rushed her to a hospital in critical condition, where she remains with a “life-altering injury.”

Akau fled his apartment on Wellington Crescent before police arrived. They arrested him a day later in Southdale.

He remains in custody.
