A mysterious floating island on Williston Reservoir in northern BC disappeared in late August after appearing out of nowhere earlier in the summer.

The missing island was found again earlier this week after travelling about 30 km in 15 days.

BC Hydro said it located the island using “a combination of satellite imagery, observations from small aircraft and reports from boaters.”

BC Hydro was skeptical when it first saw reports on Facebook of a forested island the size of two football fields floating on its reservoir.

“In the age of AI, it's important to verify unusual reports before drawing conclusions,” said BC Hydro Community Relations Manager Bob Gammer.

As soon as BC Hydro confirmed the existence of the runaway island using satellite imagery, it vanished.

The island evetually turned up on the shoreline of the Ospika Arm of Williston Reservoir, approximately 30 kilometres northwest of where it was first discovered near Finlay Bay.

BC Hydro is urging people to stay off the island.

“The island is made up of logs and decaying woody debris, making it unstable and unsafe to land on or climb onto,” it said.

"Finding the island has answered one question, but it has raised several others," said Gammer. "While we're pleased to have confirmed the island's location, there is still more to learn about how it formed and how it came to drift across the reservoir. We'll continue monitoring the island and learning more about its origins and movement as the story unfolds.”

A truck carrying hundreds of boxes of mac and cheese tipped over on Montreal’s South Shore last Friday, injuring the driver and spilling powdered cheese mix on the highway.

The crash occurred around 7 AM at Route 132 in Brossard, near the Samuel-De Champlain Bridge.

The truck driver was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

No other injuries were reported.

The SQ is investigating to determine what led to the cheesy crash.

A Guelph man is facing charges after allegedly posing as an off-duty police officer and sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

On August 20, a 15-year-old girl told police that she’d been sexually assaulted in the early hours of the morning after accepting a ride from a stranger in a vintage red truck in downtown Guelph.

The girl said she and another girl approached the classic car around 1:30 AM to ask for a ride to the Guelph train station.

The man allegedly identified himself as an off-duty police officer and “provided information” that led the girls “to believe he was legitimate.”

The man then drove the complainant and her friend around the city before dropping the friend off at an unidentified location.

He then drove the girl to a nearby parking lot, where he allegedly sexually assaulted her.

Two days later, 69-year-old Brian Deboer was arrested after turning himself in at the Guelph Police station.

The charges against him have not been proven in court.
