A Clarington man has been handed a driving-under-influence (DUI) charge after allegedly drunk-driving a golf cart through a Kawartha Lakes trailer park.

34-year-old Richard Rogers from Clarington, ON, reportedly crashed the cart into a parked car around 1 AM last Sunday, then engaged in a verbal dispute with the car’s owner.

The trailer park supervisor heard a commotion and called 9-1-1. 

Police responded and arrested Rogers. He now faces two impaired driving charges and his license has been suspended for 90 days.

He’s scheduled to appear in court in Lindsay at a later date.

A man is dead after a propane explosion at a golf resort near Peterborough, ON.

63-year-old Derek Harding from Warkworth, ON, was in a trailer cottage at Bellemere Winds Golf Resort around 3 PM last Wednesday when the explosion happened.

He was reportedly on fire before emergency crews responded. By the time firefighters arrived, he was no longer on fire but his body was badly burned.

He was airlifed to a Toronto-area hospital, where he died early Thursday morning.

Harding was an employee at Bellmere Winds, which is now running a GoFundMe campaign for his family.

The resort says it will fully cooperate with the OPP’s investigation into the explosion.

Harding’s wife, Clare, called her husband’s burns “catastrophic” in a Facebook post after his death.

“I can confirm that my husband, Derek Harding, succumbed at 1.10am (Thursday) morning to catastrophic burns as a result of the propane explosion at Bellmere winds golf resort,” she posted in the Warkworth Community Bulletin group.

“I would ask that you offer us the courtesy of privacy at this time whilst we grieve the loss of a much loved husband, father and grandfather.”

Otonabee-South Monaghan Fire Chief Chuck Parsons says that while the explosion was propane-related, it was not from a tank.

The fire was extinguished before it could damage any other trailers on the resort.

No other injuries were reported.

A Kawartha Lakes man is dead following an accident on his riding lawnmower.

The 69-year-old man was cutting grass at his home in Little Britain last Saturday evening around 8 PM when the accident occurred. 

He was pronounced dead at the scene on Salem Road after emergency crews responded.

Police have not yet released details of the accident, but the OPP have ruled out the possibility of foul play.

The investigation remains ongoing. The man’s cause of death has not yet been released.
