Good morning.

In 399 BC, Socrates was put to death for “corrupting the youth” (among other charges).

It’s hard to pin down exactly how he corrupted the youth – perhaps one of my smart subscribers could enlighten me – but the point remains that, over 2,000 years later, we still take this crime rather seriously.

… emphasis on “rather.”

A Newfoundland couple is currently accused of committing several crimes, including corrupting the youth – AKA pedophilia.

They face a maximum of ~two years in jail.

Socrates would like a word.

I would say “enjoy” today’s stories, but the news this week was a tad on the dark side.

⌛️ Today’s read is 1.2 minutes long.

A Newfoundland couple is facing up to two years in jail for corrupting the youth.

The man and woman — who police are not identifying to protect the identity of the youth complainant — allegedly participated in “sexual immorality and drug use and thereby did endanger the morals" of two children under the age of 12.

The couple are also charged with incest, sexual assault, sexual interference, and making child pornography, among other allegations.

The man is also charged with bestiality.

The couple are currently being detained in separate prisons as they await their trials.

The woman told the court via phone call that she intends to seek bail. When the judge asked her if she had a surety, she replied through tears, “Yes, I do.”

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says it has executed "a number of search warrants" since the complaint was first lodged in early May.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

The Death of Socrates (1787), by Jacques-Louis David

A teacher has been suspended from a British Columbia high school after allegedly taunting students and calling them names.

Kylejeet Grewal, a Metro Vancouver teacher in the Coquitlam School District, allegedly had several run-ins with a teenager referred to as “Student A” in a report made to the BC Commissioner for Teacher Regulation.

Grewal reportedly sent an email to the student’s parent in November 2022 in which he called the student a “gangster wannabe” and said the youth should see a “board-certified psychiatrist for evaluation.”

Two months later, Grewal sent another email about Student A to school administrators in which he said he suspected Student A and his parents of being involved in a gang.

Grewal also allegedly advised another student not to date Student A because he “was not a good kid, would not treat them well, had sold drugs, and that they should not be friends with Student A.”

In January 2023, Grewal reportedly told two grade 11 students to accompany him to the office. When they refused, he allegedly said, “Are you too much of a p—y to go to the office?”

Later, in another interaction, Grewal told a student to get to class and said “he bet the student felt pretty good about themself for selling drugs to underage kids.” The student responded by saying they worked for their parent, and Grewal replied saying, “I bet you do.”

Grewal was suspended by the school district last month.

“The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers”

A Montreal toddler has died after she was blown away in a bouncy castle on Sunday afternoon.

The three-year-old girl sustained fatal injuries after the inflatable castle was picked up by the wind in Montreal's LaSalle borough.

A total of 11 people — seven adults and four children — were injured during the incident. Of those, six were taken to a hospital.

The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. in Ouellette Park, where the Madre Dei Cristiani Church was holding a community party.

At the time, Environment Canada reported wind gusts of up to 50 km/h in the area.

The wind reportedly picked the bouncy castle up and threw it several metres away.
