Good morning. And welcome to our new subscribers.

This week’s stories raise some interesting questions, like:

  • Can you hunt in Greater Toronto suburbia without getting caught?

  • Can you run drugs in a rental car?

  • Can you stake a mining claim in downtown Kitchener?

Yes, yes, and yes—or so it would appear.

Enjoy.

HUNTING

ā€œIT’S WABBIT SEASONā€

Police are searching for the owner of a white pickup truck who drove through a quiet Newmarket neighbourhood this week and opened fire on a bunny rabbit sitting on someone’s front lawn.

Security-camera footage of the shooting shows the truck drive past a house, reverse, and stop in front of the lawn where the rabbit is grazing.

The rabbit—which is blurred in the video—appears to attempt a getaway before being shot dead.

6ixBuzz posted the video across its socials, claiming that York Regional Police (YRP) ā€œwere called but nothing was done.ā€

The cops took issue with this slight and said they are ā€œinvestigatingā€ the incident.

ā€œIt’s very concerning that anyone would be firing a firearm in a residential area, or killing a rabbit for no reason,ā€ said YRP Constable James Dickson.

YRP also said not to ā€œbelieve everything you readā€ on 6ixBuzz.

Police are currently deliberating whether to refer this case to the Ministry of Natural Resources or the provincial Hate-Crime Policing Unit.

However, they admit this crime may have a much simpler explanation:

DRUGS

IT’S FENTANYL A FEATURE

Turo is like Airbnb for cars… but sometimes your rental car might come with traces of illegal drugs on the steering wheel.

That’s according to an Alberta man who was stopped at the border earlier this year while driving home from Montana, where he was picking up a friend.

Krisztian Riez crossed the US border in his Turo rental without issue, but was stopped by Canadian border guards when re-entering the country the same day on his way back to Calgary.

The CBSA agents searched his car and found fentanyl on the steering wheel and in the backseat. Then, they took everything out of the car and sent the sniffer dogs in.

During the 3-hour search, the border guards found a total of 2mg of fentanyl—enough to kill an average-sized adult.

ā€œThey went into every nook and cranny of my life, as well as the passenger’s life, thinking that we were drug dealers or drug smugglers,ā€ said Riez, who insisted that he had only rented the car to drive his friend to Calgary.

Eventually, the guards believed his story and concluded that the fentanyl was left over from a previous renter of the car.

Turo has no way of inspecting the vehicles available for rent on its platform, but the company still denied that hard drugs were found in the car Riez rented.

Turo removed the vehicle from its platform following Riez’s complaint, but it was relisted under 24 hours later.

Not to worry: the owner cleaned it thoroughly before putting it back up for rent, says Turo.

The company offered Riez a full refund and compensation for his time spent in custody at the border, but for some reason he refused

ā€œI want reform,ā€ Riez said. ā€œPublic change and reform. Not just for Turo but for all ridesharing companies to take hazardous substances seriously and to have policies in place and really think about the customers that they’re trying to keep safe.ā€

Alright there, buddy, simmer down.

Just take the money and be thankful the border guards believed your cute little story because—frankly—I don’t.

WATCH

METH MINER

A pickaxe-wielding homeless man appears to be harassing pedestrians in downtown Kitchener.

A video that surfaced online earlier this week shows the shirtless bum emerge from an alley and strike a man twice with the dull end of his pickaxe.

The incident went down at 6:30 AM on Monday morning, according to the Reddit user who posted the video.

The men were speaking to each other before the assault. The nature of their conversation is unclear.

It’s possible the bum had staked a mining claim that the other man was disputing.

After all, downtown Kitchener is notorious for its vast deposits of crystal meth lying just beneath (but mostly atop) the surface of the ground.
